Monday, June 9th
We have had a busy month. The Scouts did a wonderful job in the Memorial Day Parade. Our troop may have appeared a little small, but when we are providing banner carriers and flag carriers to the front of the Scout group, it will have that affect.
The Spring Camporee was also very well attended (~100 more people than last year.) It went very smoothly and there were many compliments to 851's Mr. Buechel for his efforts in organizing that event. Kudos to the troop and the crew for their help in running that event as well. Congratulations to Cameron on being elected to the O.A.
Mrs. Pibal officially passed the torch to Mr. Collard on June 1st. Congratulations to 851's new Committee Chair! I will still be available as a Committee Member but am turning my attention to the District Commissioner position. I will do my best to keep up the calendar aspect of the web-page, but this part will be delegated to the Troop Scribe.
On that note, for our parents, I highly recommend taking a troop leadership position. It has been a fantastic learning experience for me and I can't imagine that it wouldn't be of benefit to every parent in our troop. There is so much training available (2nd only to the U.S. armed forces and most of it's free!), that you can't help but learn something if you just attend.
The Free Fishing Weekend was also well attended. Even though we had to bug out early, (Good call Scott - I heard the park flooded), the Scouts and Venture Crew helped a lot of people to experience canoeing while the event lasted.
On a completely separate note. Mr. Bourelle has been cooking up a storm! He once again ran a dutch oven demonstration at the Spring Camporee. He teamed up with Mr. Boldt and between them it was an impressive display of food preparation. (There were many well-fed leaders-lol) Mr. Bourelle also took on all the food preparation for the Free Fishing weekend to allow the Scouts those few hours of extra time to work with the DNR all day. Thank you Mr. Bourelle.
See you at the highway cleanup and good luck to those who are off to Boundary Waters at the end of this week.
Tuesday, May 20th
At the meeting on Monday (the 19th), The Scouts worked on the E-Prep badge. The Committee met. The TLC voted to approve the expense up to $250.00 of making a troop patch for the Free Fishing Weekend if the details can be worked out.
Thursday, April 3rd, 2008
At the meeting on Monday the 31st, The Scouts worked to prepare for Mr. Abbot to work on the E-Prep badge with them. Mrs. Pibal asked SPL Peter to find a date to meet with the TLC for program planning. Mr. Hawkins handed out order forms for the flower sale. Money should be collected as the Scouts sell and should be turned in no later than the 21st of April. The flowers will be delivered the Wednesday or Thursday before Mother's Day. These are all hanging baskets and will sell for $20.00 each. Mr. Bourelle asked to have time next week to go over some Boundary Waters information. Those who are planning to go to the Boundary Waters should plan to attend. Mr. Buechel has the patches from Klondike Derby and will bring them next week.
It was announced that the Englands hit a deer and will have some trouble getting to meetings for the next little bit. They have also suffered the loss of Mr. Englands aunt and our prayers are with them. Mr. Curtiss announced that Mrs. Pibal was given the District Award of Merit at the District Awards Banquet.
At the meeting on the 17th of March, the Scouts talked about working on Personal Fitness and Wilderness Survival with Mr. Kozlowski. Cameron and Michael agreed to take the positions to which they were elected in absentia. Mrs. Curtiss asked if the troop would be willing to make posters to welcome the troops back from Iraq to their base in Italy.
Tuesday, March 11th, 2008
Well, there has been quite a lot going on since I last had the chance to post. The troop welcomes 2 new members crossing over from 3849 and 3874. We would like to welcome Joshua and Lucas. We also welcome the Scouts from Sheboygan Troop 859 who have decided to make their scouting home with us. Welcome Nathan, Brandon and Dustin.
We have had some changes to the troop's by-laws voted on and accepted by the TLC. Now, if a Scout leaves the troop to join another Scouting Unit within a year, (If they have to move out of the area or if they turn 18 and join the Venturing program), their personal account will follow them to the new unit. The TLC also voted to approve paying for 1/2 of any training course whose initial cost is under $100.00 out of the troop funds, with the condition that such funds are available. This is for leaders and Scouts.
We have also had troop elections! I have randomly placed our new Scouts into the various patrols. I would appreciate it if the TLC would have a look at that and let me know if these assignments are acceptable. I would also like the TLC to address the issue of giving more of the introductory ranked Scouts leadership positions as First class and above are automatically Troop Guides if they do not have a position, but the earlier ranks require a leadership position to advance. Some of them do not have positions after the last elections. Also, the list I was given contains 3 Librarians. I believe this was due to a miscommunication. I don't think we need 3 Librarians. I would like to ask the TLC to get together and address these issues.
Some of the older Scouts want to arrange a campout for the last weekend in March. This would allow an opportunity for those working towards certain merit badges to complete some of their requirements as well as earning the Polar Bear patch for this year. Mrs. Pibal would like to remind the leaders that the District Volunteer Awards Banquet is coming up on March 30th and she wants to turn in the registration for those who are planning to attend by the end of the week.
At Monday's (Feb. 18th) meeting, the Scouts worked on the preliminary requirements for the Emergency Preparation merit badge. Mr. Bourelle asked for clarification on whether or not children were welcome at the District Awards Banquet. Mrs. Pibal has confirmed that children are welcome to attend with their parents.
At Monday's (Feb. 4th) meeting, Mrs. Pibal made a presentation on earning the religious emblem and the PRAY patch as Thomas was unable to attend due to Driver's Ed classes. The troop and crew worked on knots and other essential knowledge in preparation for the Klondike Derby.
The TLC also met and voted to approve paying for 1/2 of training course costs for the Wilderness First Aid Course for both Leaders and Scouts who wish to attend. They also approved of changing the Troop by-laws to allow a Scout's personal account to follow him to another Scouting unit. (This means if a Scout has to move with his family, he will not lose his personal account if he joins a Scouting unit at their new locale. It also means that those Scouts who are turning 18 and wish to join a Venture Crew will have those funds they have earned as well.)
SPL Michael has graciously written up a short piece on the Winter Court of Honor
On Monday the 17th of December, Troop 851 celebrated its combined Christmas party and Winter court of Honor. Thanks to Mrs. Curtiss there was turkey for all to enjoy. Everyone that came supplied a dish to pass, to supplement the main dish.
After a while, the meeting started with a flag ceremony. Mr. Kraus, our District Executive, began with his F.O.S. (Friends Of Scouting) presentation. Next Mr. Curtiss handed out awards to Dayvin, Sam, and Michael. Following the awards, Tony, Cameron, Jacob, Joseph, and Hunter presented a skit entitled The New York Minute: a Remix. After the skit, Mr. Curtiss introduced all of the adult leaders present, and presented Mrs. Curtiss with a bouquet of roses, because, as he said, she does a lot to help the troop and him. The other adult leaders were also given the opportunity to present their spouses with a rose.
The venturing crew also presented a new leader, Mrs. Bourelle, and a new member. Congratulations to the Venture Crew.
All of the boys in the troop participated in a gift exchange. Each person wrapped a gift, and then randomly gave it to a fellow scout. Mr. Curtiss also gave out treat bags to all the kids.
Mr. Curtiss wrapped up the meeting with a Scoutmaster’s Minute, after the retiring of the flag.
Thank you to everyone, especially Mrs. Curtiss, who contributed time and food to the court of honor.
A Merry Christmas season to everyone, and a happy and peaceful New Year.
BY SPL MICHAEL
The Court of Honor was well attended with lots of good food. (Which, as we all know, is an important element in keeping a group of teenage boys happy. lol) There were only a few Merit Badges handed out, but they were mostly ones that are required for Eagle. Good Job to those that earned them!
Our soon to be retiring Senior Patrol Leader had our calendar to hand out. I have updated our calendar here to match that calendar with a few small changes. I'm very happy to have it done as I'm sure Michael is as well. Peter, you're on-deck for the next one which should cover meetings/events until next December.
My apologies for not keeping up with the web-page as I ought. It is a very busy time of year.
At Monday's meeting, (Oct.15th), The Scouts worked on rank advancement requirements. They also worked on the pocket games that the troop has agreed to make for our troops. The plan was to open up and dry out the tents and the dining fly, but the weather was uncooperative. If anyone has a building large enough to help us dry our equipment after a rainy campout, please contact Mr. Curtiss or Mr. Bourelle.
Mr. Kozlowski brought in some fudge bars to share with the troop for the wonderful job they did at the Fall Camporee. 851 was recognized as the most helpful troop. (And may I say that it just puts tears in my eyes to watch them put up and take down the dining fly. It is my best indicator that they are really working together as a team. It's a beautiful thing and I encourage all of our parents to stay long enough or arrive for pickup early enough at our campouts to watch it done.)
It was also announced that Sam's Eagle project will be held at Camp Y-Coda on Nov. 10th, starting at 9:00am. The rain date or finishing date (if necessary) will be Nov. 11th. Lunch will be provided.
At Monday's meeting, (Oct.8th), The parent's had a committee meeting while the Scouts worked out details for the Fall Camporee.
Mr. Arndt brought in some juice and MRE's to share with the Scouts.
At Monday's meeting, (Oct.1st), we welcomed a new Scout to Troop 851. The Scouts set the menu for the Fall Camporee. (If any of the new Scouts need camping equipment, please contact one of the troop's adult leadership and we will do our best to see that your Scout has what they need to stay warm and dry at the camporee.)
The Scouts were reminded of the 100th anniversary logo contest, informed of a quilting event to be held at Laack's Hall in Johnsonville. This is to make blankets for our troops. It will start Tuesday, Nov. 6th and run through Saturday, Nov. 10th from 9:00am until you get tired. The Stegers announced that they will have Black Lab puppies ready to go to new, loving homes in a few weeks.
At Monday's meeting(Sept.24th)there was a parent's meeting. Thank you to all the parents who attended. The Scouts held elections and the patrol chart has been updated. Please get to know who is in your patrol. I have Michael listed in the Hawk Patrol as bugler, but he is not technically in a patrol as he is currently the SPL. I just wanted to be sure that the bugler was listed somewhere, so we would know who he is.
Mr. Curtiss announced that he would be conducting Troop Leader Training (TLT)for the various positions in the next few weeks, so those Scouts with a new position should be sure to be there. Please also note that this training is required for those Scouts who would like to attend the NAYLES course at Philmont. Keep in mind that NYLT will be coming up next spring. Those Scouts who are eligible should be looking over the requirements for that. (Available at the Bay Lakes Web site. There is a link at the bottom of this page.)
Mr. Curtiss and Mrs. Pibal have both completed the second session of their Wood Badge Training and will now be concentrating on working their tickets. They each must complete 5 "ticket" items (challenges they have set themselves with teh guidance of the Wood Badge staff) within the next 18 months.
At Monday's Court of Honor, 25 merit badges earned over the summer were awarded. Good Job guys! There were also two rank advancments announced. Congratulations Tyler and Nathaniel!
It was announced that next week's meeting will also be a parent's meeting, we look forward to seeing you all.
H.C.E. has requested that our troop devote some of their time to making simple pocket games for our soldiers, to be included in care packages that they intend to send out soon. Salem U.C.C. has requested that the Scouts bring in non-perishable food items for their food drive and will have a barrel reserved for Troop 851. they are also requesting recipies for the church cookbook they plan to produce. Those recipies will need to be put on special recipie cards that you can obtain from Mrs. Curtiss and are due by Sept. 30th.
Mr. Collard announced that popcorn sales will be beginning soon. He will have the popcorn available for Show and Go sales at his house beginning on Saturday, Sept. 29th. Mrs. England announced that Piggly Wiggly has given us permission to sell popcorn there, at both entrances, every day of the sale from 3-6 pm.
Mr. Bourelle talked about organizing a trip to Boundary Waters Canoe Area this coming summer. (So, YAY! Popcorn!) The Venture Crew invited the Troop to go along on an excursion to Eagle Cave. Mrs. Pibal announced the BSA 100th Anniversary Logo Competition.
At Monday's meeting the Scouts got re-aquainted after a long summer. Mr. Bourelle reviewed their books and encouraged them to work on advancment. They also played "The Prince of Wales Has Lost His Pants".
There were a lot of announcements as well as a committee meeting. There were many compliments passed on from the veterans and members of military families connect for our help at the BRAVO homecoming picnic. And, may I say, our Scouts did an outstanding job. This was an opportunity to demonstrate the value of scouting for a group of folks who hadn't had much contact with us as a troop and I can't tell you how wonderful it was to hear one person after another complimenting their manners and hard work. Way to go guys!
The Scouts were encouraged to attend our local pack's round-ups. (On the 11th at city park at 6:00 and on the 18th at SJL at 6:30.) Wear your uniforms and offer to help. It will give those new cubs the idea that Scouting goes beyond Cub Scouting.
Mr. Curtiss read a thank you letter from Sargento for our help with grounds maintenence at their picnic. Committee meeting notes will be posted when I have the time to dedicate to it. (Hopefully sometime this week.)
The cost for the Free fishing weekend came out to $12.63/person(instead of the usual $10.00 per person per night charge.) Please turn that into the Ladwigs as soon as you can or let them know it should come from your account. Thanks.
At Monday's meeting, Mrs. Pohlman came to finish up the Personal Management Merit Badge and to start it with some of the newer scouts if they were interested. The committee met and the notes from that will be posted below the photos as usual, when I am able to get a minute to type them up. The TLC also met and voted to use some of the troop's money to finish the tie-dyed T-shirts they will be making next week after the highway cleanup.
Wow!, what a lot of stuff was accomplished over the last week! The Scouts did their usual excellent job of helping folks with the basics of canoeing as well as giving a fair number of rides to folks who just felt more comfortable with experienced help. The DNR expressed their thanks to the troop with pins.
The Spring Camporee was very well attended and went very smoothly with lots of help from the LTC staff who did a wonderful job of running the different stations. Troop 851's own Mr. Fischer gave the Scout's Own service on Saturday evening.
On a personal note, I would like to say that going between the two events provided me with an opportunity to confirm the wisdom of having my son in scouting and participating as an adult leader myself. I have always felt that scouting is a valuable resource for parents as well as a character and skill building experience for the Scouts. This weekend, I watched all those Scouts and our own Venture Crew at the Spring Camporee, working hard and pitching in to help each other and having fun doing it. I watched at the Free fishing weekend as our Scouts cheerfully gave up their fishing to go back to work after the rain had stopped and the DNR decided to get in a few more rides before the end of the day. And while I was at the Free fishing weekend, I also saw a group of foul-mouthed and badly behaved young people, about the same ages as the scouts I had been watching all weekend. It really highlighted the difference that scouting can make in a young person's life. Oh sure, our Scouts are not all angels, but I couldn't help but think what a difference could be made in the lives of those other teens if they had the experiences and adult leadership the scouting program provides. It left me feeling extremely privileged to be part of the scouting program here.
At the meeting Monday (June 4th) (Not a committee meeting,-oops!) The Scouts laid out the tents to dry and shared some of the food that was left over from the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Kozlowski brought in a number of camp chairs to donate to the troop as a thank you for the troop's help with their challenges after the fire last year.
The Scouts did a wonderful job in the Memorial Day parade on Monday. 4 of the scouts had band conflicts, but I know at least two of them were wearing as much of their scout uniforms as they could. Good job Austin and Thomas!
Please note that those scouts who are attending the Free Fishing weekend should meet at River Park in Sheboygan Falls on Friday at about 5:00-5:30pm. If you can't get there until later, that's fine, come when you can. If you need a ride, please call Mr. Arndt or Mr. Kozlowski. If you are planning on attending the Spring Camporee, please contact Mr. Buechel or Mr. and Mrs. England for details.
At Monday's (May 21st) meeting, The Scouts worked folding the flag properly. they also were congratulated for doing a good job at the Blue Star salute to military families on Sat. Money was collected for Gardner Dam Scout Camp and the scouts decided which items would be added to their variable menus.
The Scouts also worked on their fitness requirements by running/walking a mile. The committee met and those notes will be posted as usual below the photos. Highway cleanup was scheduled for June 18th.
At Monday's (April 30th) meeting, The Scouts worked on knot tying and took a quiz to see how to follow directions.
Mr. Bourelle thanked the scouts for coming to the campout last weekend where they learned how to make hobo meals, how to pitch a tent and take one down and how to dig a keyhole firepit. Many also earned or reviewed the requirements for earning their toten' chit. The scouts were also able to witness good citizenship skills in action that weekend as there was a hit and run accident nearby on Friday. Mr. Bourelle called 911, Mrs. Bourelle and Mrs. Pibal went to render first aid if ncessary(it wasn't- Thank God for seatbelts)and Mr. Curtiss followed the vehicle that drove off with his cell phone to assist law enforcement in apprehending the fleeing driver. There were also numerous other folks who stopped to help the driver who was hit.
Mr. Arndt announced that the Blue star salute to military families will be held at the armory in Plymouth. He talked about what the blue star means and reminded them that class "A" uniforms are in order for this event. Mr. Curtiss presented Scout patches to Hunter, Austin, Joseph and Caleb. Congratulations!
Peter had a sign up sheet for the Scouts who want to help with his eagle project which will take place on May 12th, May 26th and June 17th. It will be at the Ladwigs house. Please bring work gloves and and goggles if you have them, and work clothes are appropriate.
At Monday's (April 23rd) meeting, The Scouts worked on knot tying and picked a menu for the campout at Mr. Bourelle's house on Saturday. Mr. Curtiss went over their books and 3 of our newest Troop members advanced to the rank of Scout. Congratulations to Austin, Jacob and Hunter!
The Green Cheeked Conure Patrol elected their leaders. Congratulations to Hunter and Austin! Highway cleanup will be rescheduled for another date.
At Monday's (April 16th) meeting, The Scouts worked on knot tying and played capture the flag.
The new scout patrol will elect their patrol leader and assistant patrol leader next week. The Scouts will do some menu planning next week for the campout at Bourelle's on the 27th-29th. It was announced that the highway cleanup will take place on the afternoon of the 28th. Mr. Curtiss said the troop will talk about rockets next week as well.
At Monday's (April 9th) meeting, Mr. and Mrs. Creutz attended the meeting to donate some camping equipment and share some of Mr. Creutz's adventures with the troop. The Cruetz's donated two tents and enough camping equipment to equip any scout.
The committee met and those notes will be posted below the photos as always.
At Monday's (April 2nd) meeting, the older scouts worked with the younger scouts on completing their Scout rank requirements. They also played frisbee.
The Charter was shown to the troop (65 years of service) and membership cards were passed out. The notice in The Review of the awards the troop recieved at the recent awards banquet was shown. The Troop was given the Above and Beyond Unit award and Mr. and Mrs. England were named co-scoutmatsers of the year. Mr.Curtiss announced that despite the fact that we usually don't meet on days when there is no school, he needs a meeting to take care of some organizational issues for upcoming events.
At Monday's (March 19th) meeting, the scouts practiced some knots and played a new game. "Who Sir, Me Sir?, No, not me Sir, Number 4 Sir". Mr. Curtiss brought in some shirts for those scouts who need them.
Mrs. Pibal was unavailable at the meeting but would like to announce that if we have any scouts who may be unable to afford to go to Gardner Dam scout camp, you have other options. There are camperships available and we have an anonymous donor who has offered to help with up to $100.00 towards the cost of GDC. Please contact Mrs. Pibal if this would be of help to you.
At Monday's (March 12th) meeting, the scouts practiced their geocaching skills with a number of geocaches temporarily set up by the Englands. The committee met and those notes are below the photos. Mrs. Pibal handed out the new rosters and applications for National Youth Leadership Training to those Scouts who are or may be eligible. If you are interested in attending NYLT and did not recieve an application, please ask Mrs. Pibal.
At Monday's (March 5th) meeting, the scouts held troop elections and welcomed our new scouts. We will have a new scout patrol for the first time in a while. The older scouts are looking forward to helping them.
Mr. Curtiss handed out the winter camping patches to new scouts and parents who camped with us last fall. Mrs. Pibal pointed out that leadership training is coming up for both scouts and leaders. All leaders were encouraged to attend the district volunteer awards dinner on the 25th of this month at Lakeland College.
At Monday's (Feb. 26th) meeting, the scouts held Order of the Arrow elections. The troop position elections were postponed. Congratulations to Sam for earning the cooking merit badge and to Thomas for earning his personal management merit badge.
At Monday's (Feb. 19th) meeting, The scouts met with Mrs. Pohlman to complete/work on Personal Management. It was kind of nice to see some old familiar faces. John Buechel showed up for the venture crew, and Jacob Abbott stopped in to say "hello" as well. The Englands updated the troop on the troop travel bug. If you'll look at the top of the page, you will find a clickable logo. If you click on it, you will be able to see where the travel bug has been. Michael's younger brother asked for a registration form, so we hope to welcome him soon. For those of you who are planning to attend 3849"s Blue and Gold banquet, please remember to wear Class "A" uniforms.(Yes, with sashes and neckerchiefs.)
At Monday's (Feb. 12th) meeting, The scouts went over the guidelines for troop elections and Order of the Arrow elections. The committee met and discussed the fact that the re-scheduled Spring Camporee is in conflict with the Free Fishing weekend. It was decided that the Scouts should decide which event to attend as both are important to the troop. Our troop is the only group who has been allowed to camp in River Park until just recently when a group of girl scouts has also been present. We are cognizant of the honor afforded to our troop with this trust. On the other hand, our troop volunteered to organize the Spring Camporee as we have for the last few years. We are also proud to have been given the honor of organizing this fine event. This year's event will be held at LTC in conjunction with first responders training. It will be a very exciting event. Those adult leaders who have been working so hard to organize it will continue to lend their efforts to the Spring Camporee regardless of the troop's decision. Other committee notes can be found below the photos.
At Monday's (Jan. 8th) meeting, The scouts worked on some Klondike Derby skills, We went over fire safety and did a building inspection. There was much paperwork done for the re-chartering process. Mrs. Pibal would like to request that those who have not yet turned in their re-chartering paperwork do so as soon as possible. There was no committee meeting because nothing has changed since the last committee meeting. It was noted at the Winter Court of Honor/Christmas party that there are 3 scouts who only need their scoutmaster's conference and a board of review to advance in rank. Also a big Thank You to Venture Crew 9851 for organizing that event.
At Monday's (Dec. 11th) meeting, Ms. Pohlman came to work on the Personal Management Merit Badge. The scouts also worked on some first aid items. The committee met and Mrs. Pibal hopes to have the notes from that meeting as well as the previous meeting posted soon. The Venture Crew worked on details for the upcoming Winter Court of Honor. Mrs. Cripe handed out scripts for those who have a part in Joe's Eagle ceremony on this coming Sunday.
At Monday's (Dec. 4th) meeting, the venture crew and the scouts worked on planning the Winter Court of Honor. Mrs. Cripe also asked several people about participating in Joe's Eagle ceremony. It was announced that Ms.Pohlman will be at next Monday's meeting to work on Personal Management with those scouts who need to finish it. There will also be a committee meeting at the next meeting so committee members should plan to attend. The troop also signed a card for Mr.Kozicki (whose name I hope I spelled correctly) who suffered an injury from a fall while deer hunting.
At Monday's (Nov. 13th) meeting, we had 8 webelos visiting us and they went through the first sections of becoming a scout. The Scouts also decided to go to one patrol whose leaders are posted above. Mr. Curtiss announced an invitation from the snow rangers to help park cars again in January. There is, however, a conflict with the date of the Klondike derby. The salvation army has requested the scouts to be bell ringers. Joe is planning to have his eagle ceremony on Dec. 17th.
The campout at Jaeger's was a lot of fun. My apologies for not updating sooner. Tony built an igloo and slept in it all night. We had a number of webelos camp with the troop and I think they had a good time. The weather was not too cold and the woods after our recent snowfall were quite beautiful.
The Venture Crew's brat fry went o.k. Without the race crowd, they didn't do as well as last time, but they did make a profit.
At Monday's (Oct. 30th) meeting, plans were made for the campout at Jaeger's. Mr. Bourelle brought some pears to share.
At Monday's (Oct. 23rd) meeting, Mr. Buechel brought in the rack of the deer he hit with his car. Mr. Bourelle brought cake. It was announced that Nov. 11th would be a brat fry for the Venture Crew. The Scouts worked on knots and first aid. It was announced that instead of camping at the island, we would camp on the second weekend of Nov. at Jaeger's.
At Monday's (Oct. 16th) meeting, I have no idea what the scouts did, because I was in the committee meeting. I know it involved rope, so it was probably knot tying. Our newest scout advanced in rank to second class. Congratulations Mike! Peter was back , so he was able to collect the many awards he earned over the summer. Congratulations Peter! Mr. Kozlowski reminded the scouts of the Food Good Turn bag pickup on Saturday, and the K.O.C. breakfast on Sunday. The scouts were reminded that the last day of the popcorn sales is Friday the 20th, at which time Mr. Collard needs to have your paperwork, money and remaining popcorn back in his garage.
Committee notes will be under the photos, as usual, although it may take me a few weeks to get them there.

Mr. Collard was nominated in absentia to oversee any of the Scouts willing to be den chiefs.
This will take place at the Plymouth Family Restaurant at 4:30 on Friday the 19th..
Mr. Curtiss will take care of that.
The dates were announced and found less than helpful.
We discussed Which of our current parents would be good additions to the troop leadership.
Mr. Bourelle and Mr. Kozlowski will be the adult leaders coordinating the trip this year..
We discussed arrangements and noted health issues/injuries among the leadership for the event that may require a higher level of assistance. As our troop leadership has also run a camporee, we should volunteer our assistance.
1-5 on Sunday, Oct. 21st. Please attend in uniform and help out if asked.
Mrs. Pibal will be unavailable. The plan is to meet at the food pantry on Sat. Oct 20th at 8:30am. Bring maps and highlighters. Divide up the city and go pick up food. Mr. K. and Mr. Buechel will be there as our 2 deep leadership.
This event is held on the weekend of the 19th-21st. If anyone is interested, let me know.
This course is being offered April 25th-27th. It is recommneded that as many adults and over 15 Scouts attend as possible. The current scuttlebut is that it will become national policy to require every high adventure excursion to have at least one person trained in Wilderness First Aid within the next few years. (Yes, Boundary Waters is considered a high adventure excursion.)
Mrs. Nygaard has volunteered to handle the paperwork for Summer Camp this year. A big Thank You to her.
Camperships
We have to find a way to let our Scouts know that there are camperships available. None of the Scouts should be prevented from attending camp due to lack of funds.
Can we promote this training a bit more? We live in this climate and our Scouts should know this stuff. We've got some really excellent trainers available, let's see if we can't drum up some interest.
Mr. Rank said the Venture Crew will be having a winter campout at Devil's Lake and invited the troop to join them. They are thinking of Nov. 9th, 10th, and 11th.(Sam's Eagle project date)
Our chartered org. appreciated the gesture as well as the card.
Mr. Bourelle requested a November meeting to discuss the Boundary Waters trip.
The troop has about $9500.00.
Michael advanced to 1st class. Thomas is now brotherhood in O.A.
Lettering should be done on the current trailer. The list of contributors to the trailer was lost in Mr. K.'s fire. Mrs. Wester needs to be contacted to see if she has a copy or remembers who was on it.
We are still waiting for a date.
We are waiting for a date.
The Troop Committee could use a secretary and a training coordinator. Which of our new/current parents might make a good leader to fill those positions or join the ranks of assistant scoutmasters?. We would like to have a parent's meeting when we start up in the Fall.
It was decided that the Duck's Unlimited campout would serve for another campout although Eagle cave will be looked into for next year..
Filling out the cards for the highway cleanup
There is a separate card that needs to be filled out by someone in the troop to let the state know that the highway cleanup has been done as the county does not report to them.\ There is also a family that has requested our section of highway in memory of a family member. WE discussed this at length. Mr. Rank volunteered to fill out the cards. The committee is in favor of allowing the family to share the duty if that is possible.
Open Floor
August 11th was tentatively suggested as a better date for the Summer/Fall C.O.H. Mr. Bourelle asked about his merit badge counselor status. Mrs. Pibal agreed to find out what's going on with that. The TLC was asked to approve funding for printing T-shirts for GDC for the troop. They approved the expense.
On a separate note, The TLC was asked later in June to approve paying $100.00 per person towards the cost of Wood Badge Training for Mr. Curtiss and Mrs. Pibal. It was approved by 5 of 8 members of the TLC. Not all of the members were available.
The treasurer was unavailable.
All 6 of our younger scouts advanced to Scout rank..
Mr. Bourelle stated that he believes the old trailer will serve with proper maintenance now that it has been cleared out and re-packed.
Lettering should be done on the current trailer.
Mr. Bourelle has acknowleged that his schedule has prevented him from working out a date with Mr. Curtiss. He has graciously stepped aside to allow Mr. Kozlowski take on that role.
Update - The scouts who had been planning to attend all have schedule conflicts so none of our scouts will be attending this year. This training requires the presence of a troop leader for the orientation and at the pick-up as well. The last few years, this hasn't been an issue because all those who attended had parent's in leadership positions in the troop. This year, that may be a problem. Do we have any volunteers to attend these meetings for our NYLT bound scouts?
The Troop Committee could use a secretary and a training coordinator. Which of our new/current parents might make a good leader to fill those positions or join the ranks of assistant scoutmasters?. Also the committee was reminded that many of the current committee are parents of older scouts and we need to have a care towards continuity of these positions when those scouts have aged out if the current members don't wish to stay on with the troop after their scouts have moved on or left for college.
Update - This has been tabled while the demographics of the area are reviewed. Mr. Kraus had asked if the troop would be willing to mentor a new tiger den at Fairview.
Mr. Curtiss plans to attend most of these events as well as the listed leaders.
Free Fishing Weekend: Mr. Arndt and Mr. Kozlowski will be present with other leaders checking in. Mr. Collard will also be present as his youngest will be attending as a webelo.
Spring Camporee: Mr. Buechel, Mr. and Mrs. England, Mr. Bourelle and various others checking in.
Sargento Picnic: Mr. and Mrs. England, Mrs. Pibal
Memorial Day Parade:Mrs. Pibal, Mr. and Mrs. England, Mr. Buechel, Mr. Bourelle
GDC: Mr. Curtiss, Mr. Buechel, poss. Mr. Bourelle
Help for the friday session of the Cub Scout Day Camp at Road America has been requested.
$9200.00 in the overall account although some checks have come in that should bring that total to about $9800.00.
The advancement chairs were unavailable.
Same old, same old.
Inventory will take place at the Bourelle's on the weekend of April 20th-22nd.
Lettering is dependent upon keeping the current trailer.
Mr. Bourelle and Mr. Curtiss are working on a date.
The Scouts will need to decide which to attend and sign up for one or the other by May 21st.
- The leaders will check their schedules and let us know by May's committee meeting.
Due to lack of applications, the full day session of adultleadership traing has been postponed until the 28th of April.
Mr. Kraus has asked if the troop would be willing to mentor a new tiger den at Fairview.
The troop committee could use a secretary and a training coordinator. Which of our parents might make a good leader to fill those positions or to join the ranks of assistant scoutmasters? If you haven't already, please take some time to review the leader selection materials put out by the BSA.
Now that we all have our new membership cards, it's a good time to set up an account on the on-line BSA training site before we misplace them.
To be determined.
There was more discussion on the proposal for a tiger den, some discussion on the preparations for the Spring camporee, some discussion of the Free fishing weekend, and Sargento would like us to work for their company picnic this summer.
The treasurer was not available.
There are no advancements to report.
No one had estimates for the proposed trailer replacement. Mr. Kozlowski suggested purchase of new shelves to make the trailer lighter and agreed to find estimates.
W have set a tentative date of April 20th-22nd to camp out at the Bourelle's place and organize the trailer as well as working on some basic skills.
Community businesses and organizations were promised credit on the side of the trailer when the funds were raised for it's purchase. Funds were approved for this purpose, but it was postponed while we discussed the purchase of a larger trailer. In recognition of our debt to the community in this regard as well as our mandate to model honorable behavior it was proposed and approved that we get those names on the current trailer asap.
AC signs has volunteered to do the lettering for free if they are allowed to advertise as well. Mrs. Pibal asked Mr. Curtiss to find out if they are willing to do the lettering on our current trailer as well as a new trailer, should we purchase one.
Mr. Kozlowski, Mr. Arndt and Mr. Bourelle are planning to be the adult leadership for the free fishing weekend. The Englands and Mr. Curtiss will be the adult leadership for the Spring Camporee.
The Scouts will need to decide which to attend and sign up for one or the other by May 21st.
We have purchased the Troop Leadership Training Guide for Mr. Curtiss and Mr. Bourelle has agreed to be the 2-deep leadership for him duriing the training.
Mr. Bourelle has agreed to be 2 deep leadership for Mr. Curtiss in having a planning day shortly after troop elections.
The application forms were handed out at tonight's meeting.
They will be receiving Scoutmaster of the year awards for their work in establishing the Venture Crew.
She will still be Committee Chair for this Troop. (Unless someone else would like to give it a try?)
It was decided to invite them to the Free fishing weekend.
We discussed training.
Mr. Arndt Mr. Kozlowski and Mrs. Pibal indicated an interest in attending Wood Badge Training. Mr. Meyer brought up a question about a church whose troop no longer exists and what they can do with leftover equipment/materials/awards. Mrs. Pibal referred him to Mr. Kraus with a suggestion that they may want to charter another troop.
There is $10,076.67in the troop account.
Albert has not re-chartered with the troop and he has a substantial amount in his personal account. It was agreed to make sure he has a scout catalogue so that he can use those funds before they revert to the troop, if he should decide not to re-join within the year.
Dayvin advanced to Life Scout.
No one had estimates for the proposed trailer replacement.
Mr. Bourelle would like 2 meetings (troop meetings or weekend days) before the Fall Fishing weekend/Spring Camporee to implement some of the organizational ideas that were proposed at the last meeting..
Mr. Bourelle noted that AC signs has volunteered to do the lettering for free if they are allowed to advertise as well.
We were assured that we would be asked to help with the Free Fishing Day activities in River Park in Sheboygan Falls this year after the upgrades to the park were finished. The date of the Spring Camporee has been changed to that same weekend. Which activity should we do? Is it possible to do both? After discussion, we decided that it should be up to the troop. Those leaders who have been organizing the Spring Camporee, are committed to continue those efforts regardless of the troop's decision.
It is worth noting that it is an honor for our troop to have such a dilemma. Having to choose between two such fine efforts to improve our community through our service is in the best spirit of the scouting movement.
It was proposed and agreed to purchase the latest Troop Program Guide. We need to have Troop Leadership Training immediately after the troop elections and it is reasonable to provide the necessary resources.
Mr. Bourelle has agreed to be 2 deep leadership for Mr. Curtiss in having a planning day shortly after troop elections.
Every Scout deserves a trained leader.
It was proposed that we keep a training log of which leaders have been trained and the dates of their training. It was noted that Scouters can earn the Key Award with the district emblem for the first time in a long time due to the achievment of the Quality District Award.
Leader Specific Training is available either as one session on April 14th, from 10:30am-1:00pm or two sessions from 7:00pm-9:30pm on April 30th and May 3rd. Both will be held at LTC. These courses are free.
Introduction to Outdoor Skills will occur on May 11th and 12th. This course is a prerequisite for Wood badge training for our Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters. I believe this course costs $25.00.
The Bay Lakes Council is also holding Wood Badge Training August 24th-26th at Camp Rokilio and September 21st-23rd at Camp Twin Lakes. This course is open to all registered adults who have completed the basic training for their position. These generally consist of Fast Start, New Leader Essentials and Position Specific Training. Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. A complete Scout uniform is mandatory. (Shirt, pants, socks, belt and patches appropriate to your Scouting position.) All participants must complete a BSA class 3 physical form. This course costs $200.00/person and is Scouting's premier adult training program. (Think NYLT for adults.)
Please attend the leadership training sessions as they are meant to help our program become stronger. Every boy deserves a trained leader. Let's set them up to succeed.
We have 5 Scouts who are currently elegible to attend NYLT. They are Brent, Cameron, Tony, Sam and Dayvin. (Technically, Greg, Peter and Thomas are also elegible, but they have already completed this course.)
We discussed dates, the den chiefs and program planning.
There is $8066.67 in the bank. There were 2 checks added tonight . One from Watson's Vending and one from the Eagle's club adding $450.00 to that total.
There were 2 scouts who signed up to attend GDC who couldn't go for various reasons at the last minute. There are no refunds and no one else was available to go in their place. It was decided that the troop would pick up $80.00 of that cost for both of those Scouts.
Advancement Chair was unavailable.
Mr. Rosploch was unavailable.
This would make it easier to tow the weight of the trailer and make it easier on the engine of the towing vehicle.
This would not make it easier to tow.
This would make it easier to tow for smaller vehicles. It would also allow for two smaller groups to camp in different places. It would also allow easier use for the venture crew.
Scouts should plan to be there at 8:00am.
It was suggested that instead of the Island we camp somewhere else. The possibility of providing a uniform shirt to new scouts was also raised.
Who will be organizing that?.
postponed for now
We are having some trouble with getting patrol leaders voted in as 3 scouts are currently unable to make the meetings and they are all from the same patrol.
Please attend the leadership training sessions as they are meant to help our program become stronger. Every boy deserves a trained leader. Let's set them up to succeed.
We discussed some problems with specific scouts and some respect issues.
Mr. and Mrs. England along with Mr. Bourelle agreed to be the event coordinators for the JDRF walk and the Fall Camporee.
So far it is a potluck.
It was decided to use one meeting to do a review of the troop by-laws, either before or the day of troop elections.
The troop accounts remain the same as boundary waters and summer camp fees have not yet been taken out. The Award dinner charges have been settled.
It was decided that each event is to have an event coordinator who will make a list of who is involved and collect money for the event ahead of time so the Ladwigs don't have to be chasing that information down.
Mr. England was unavailable, but we know that Tyler has advanced to Tenderfoot, Peter received his Life badge and Nathaniel has advanced to scout.
Mr. Rosploch was unavailable.
They have not been turned in yet as Mr. Curtiss has been unable to complete that. Mr. Collard stepped up and agreed to get that taken care of.
The back latch on the trailer needs to be welded before GDC. Mr. Bourelle said he will take care of that.
Mr. Curtiss will call Watson's vending and find out if that will be occuring this summer.
The date was set for July 10th. Mr Piedot said he could get the equipment if Mr. Rank is unable to meet us.
The date is still not set for that event.
Does the trailer need to be replaced? It has been suggested that we:
The Venture Crew will have separate finances from the troop. Thanks to Mrs. Piedot for stepping up to that challenge.
Shared fund raising events between the troop and the venture crew will be handled on an individual basis. the default rule of thumb will be that funds raised will be split 50/50 between the treasuries and the individuals who work an event. The individual shares will be divided up just as in the past. the 50% that will go to the treasuries of the troop and venture crew will be divided based on the % of scout hours/crew hours for those working at the event.
For instance say they work together at the J.L. French picnic. There are 8 people from the boy scout troop, (2 adults and 6 scouts), who attend and 2 venture crew. All individuals work 5 hours each. We receive a check for $200.00. The check would be divided as follows:
Then there is the matter of equipment. It was asked how would precedence be determined if the troop and the crew are planning separate outings and both require use of the same equipment? It was decided that because the crew is small, there shouldn't be much conflict, as the troop has ample excess equipment to be shared. As the crew grows, they will be purchasing their own equipment, so this is unlikely to become a problem in the foreseeable future.
The Eagles Club would like the troop to help out with their 4th of July celebration on the 8th. They need 2-3 shifts from 1-7pm with ~12 people/shift. It was announced that the Eagle's Club is also going to have a brat fry for the Curtiss Family on August 12th. There was concern voiced about the possibility that alcohol will be served at the event. Mrs. Pibal will call and clarify the BSA requirements with the Eagle's Club.
There will be again be opportunities to attend leader training sessions this fall. We would like to see all the leaders attending at least one session. The courses have been changed a bit, so there should be something new if you've already attended leader training in the past.
Mr. Collard has generously agreed to once again take on the position of popcorn kernel for our unit.
Mr. Piedot has generously volunteered his time and resources to let the scouts and venture crew do some fund raising during Mill Street Days if there is an opening available to us. He will be checking on that and letting us know the date and times ASAP.
Anyone who is able to help out with that event (Those not going on the Boundary Waters Trip), please contact Mark Mantz or Jake Kraus. The phone number for Mr. Mantz is in The Guide. He is probably the better contact person as Mr. Kraus will be gone this week. the date is June 23rd. The event will run from 9:00am - 3:00pm.
Troop 851's Eagle List
If you should be on this list, please e-mail me using the address at the bottom of the page. Troop 851 has also decided to "adopt" a soldier. Eagle Scout Chris Diedrich formerly
of Troop 851 is serving in the Army in Iraq. We have sent him a package for
himself and to share with his unit. Some of the items donated were:
We have decided to do one big permission slip for the events we know will be coming up during the year.
Returning the permission slip will not lock your Scout into attending all these events,
but it will help us a great deal on getting our paperwork turned in in a timely fashion.
We will have reminders and sign up sheets when events approach. Please get those slips
turned in ASAP. Thanks. I would like to make a comments section for anyone who has ideas or helpful
hints. Also I am thinking it would be great to have a separate page for the calendar, archived meeting notes, photos and the committee notes. Perhaps, one of the
Scouts would like to design that as part of their computer merit badge work, hmm?
(I'm using HTML for this page. Write me the code and I'll put it up to see if it works. : ) Thanks
